Finding local laws

You can find local laws:

Online

All local councils have their local laws on their webpage.

You may be able to find information about local laws in several places on the website – either by going directly to the 'Local Laws' link or looking for your issue by subject area such as 'Fundraising & Community Events.'

Example:  You are a community organisation based in Melbourne. Your local council is the City of Maroondah. You want to raise funds for your organisation by collecting money on the roadside near the local shopping centre. You are unsure if you need a permit to do this.

  • Locate the City of Maroondah’s website - www.maroondah.vic.gov.au/
  • Select 'Local Laws' tab. (If the local laws section of the website is not obvious, search for “local laws” or the subject you are interested in, eg. fundraising)
  • Select  'Roadside Fundraising.' The local law says that a permit is required to conduc temporary raodside fundraising or highway charity collections.
  • You'll need a permit, but the good thing is: permits are free and available for NFPs!

At your local council

The local laws will be available for public inspection or purchase at your local council.
