Law & Social Change Dialogue 2010: Can lawyers change the world?
Law and social change dialogue
19 October 2024
What do Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher and Banjo Paterson all have in common? They all helped define nations.... and they were all lawyers.
For decades lawyers have called for justice in the courts and on the streets, often against great odds. Some do this using legal tools, working within the legal system. Others go outside these traditional methods or abandon the law altogether. So can the law - and lawyers - have the power to bring about social change, and is it even their role?
On 19 October 2010, Simon Sheikh, National Director of advocacy organisation GetUp! and Nic Frances, social entrepreneur and CEO of alternative energy company cool nrg debated these questions at the inaugural PILCH Law and Social Change Dialogue. The Chaser’s Julian Morrow moderated this entertaining and engrossing matching of the minds to inspire us to think differently about law and social change.
