IT for community organisations: tips on legal issues

Websites and other information and communication technologies (ICTs) are increasingly important to community organisations, but are you aware of the legal issues involved?

There are numerous legal issues that those running your group should be aware of in this area, such as the use of content and photographs, linking with other organisations and the use of software.  Does your group have a policy for use of IT by staff and/or volunteers?  Does it need one?   This seminar will provide legal information and tips on best practice for your organisation as well as case studies and practical examples of how other organisations have dealt with these issues.

The seminar will be presented by:

Val Hoyle, Special Counsel (Francis Abourizk Lightowlers)

Before returning to private practice and joining FAL, Val was a senior lawyer at the Victorian Department of Human Services in Melbourne. There she developed relevant experience and expertise in drafting, negotiating and advising on all types of agreement relevant to DHS, including commercial agreements of all kinds, Funding and Service Agreements, the standard DHS commercial contract, research and general funding agreements, as well as advising on procurement issues and general commercial matters. Val specialised in intellectual property questions (especially copyright), and has a Masters in Intellectual Property Law from the University of Melbourne.

Jason Watson, Special Counsel (Francis Abourizk Lightowlers)

Prior to joining Jason was the sole lawyer at the University of South Australia where he dealt with all legal aspects of research.  Jason currently provides legal advice in relation to research, intellectual property, commercialisation and contractual matters.  He has relevant experience and expertise in negotiating and implementing licensing, assignment, shareholding and other commercialisation agreements, developing and implementing databases and legal training workshops.  Jason was a volunteer firefighter and has also undertaken work for not-for-profit organisations, including in relation to websites and copyright.
