Stories from the Front Line: The Legal Fight Against the Death Penalty
As part of the Victoria Law Foundation’s Law Week, the Public Interest Law Clearing House (Vic.) Inc. and Reprieve Australia are presenting a panel discussion with three Melbourne laywers who have been involved in pro bono legal assistance to people facing the death penalty in Asia and the U.S.

Panellists
Julian McMahon, barrister - Julian has acted on a number of death penalty cases, including representing two of the 'Bali Nine' defendants who are facing the death penalty in Indonesia.
Joel Blackwell, lawyer, Freehills - Joel advises the legal team for two of the 'Bali Nine' defendants on linguistic and cultural matters related to the legal proceedings and is fluent in Bahasa.
Matthew Goldberg, trainee lawyer, Robert Stary & Associates - Matthew has recently returned from the U.S. where he volunteered through Reprieve Australia with the Louisiana Capital Assistance Centre in New Orleans assisting with the legal defence of indigent persons facing the death penalty.
