Secretary's Satchel - Guide for Secretaries of Victorian Incorporated Associations

New laws for Victorian incorporated associations came into effect on 26 November 2012. The resources in this section have been updated to reflect the new laws. The new Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 (Vic) can be accessed here, and you can read more about the changes at Consumer Affairs Victoria's website here.

The position of secretary is an important one within any incorporated association in Victoria, and secretaries have special legal responsibilities.  Since new laws for incorporated associations came into effect on 26 November 2012, the "public officer" of an association is now known as the "secretary" of the association.

A Secretary’s Satchel – Guide for Secretaries is designed to help the secretary and others within your association by explaining legal obligations and offering practical tips and tools for running an incorporated association in Victoria.

Any secretary of an incorporated association in Victoria can benefit from this Guide, whether the association is a large association with paid employees, or a small, volunteer-run association.

*NOTE* There are new laws regulating charities and a new regulator for charities - the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). If your group is registered as a charity, new laws and changes to reporting requirements will affect your group.  For more information about these changes go to the PilchConnect information page on the ACNC here.

The links below provide the Secretary's Satchel in full, and the Transitional Guide to assist Victorian incorporated associations to understand how new laws apply to them and when transitional issues need to be considered. All associations should read the Transitional Guide before reading the Secretary's Satchel.
