Discussing the relationship between the Media and the Law
17 August 2024

In an age where the thirst for news is bottomless, the media scrutiny on lawbreakers, legal proceedings and law-making gets even more intense. The media storm that broke over legal proceedings in relation to Carl Williams, Arthur Freeman, the St Kilda Schoolgirl and the naming of sex offenders only seems to highlight the relationship between the media and the law. With journalists not only reporting but adding their opinion to the mix, how much does the news influence society, and how much does society's opinion impact on courtroom decisions and legislative change? Do journalists mirror community sentiment or create hysteria?

At this moderated discussion, our panellists who represent the judiciary, the legal profession and the media, will explore the relationship between media and the law, and whether it impacts on, or influences legislative change, decision-making, and public perception about the law.
