It is with sadness that we inform the Worcester Academy community of the passing of beloved WA friend and legendary Worcester Academy athletic director and boys basketball coach, Donald E. Rowe, who passed today at the age of 91 following a short illness. Dee as he was affectionately known to all, graduated from the Academy in 1947 and became a towering presence on the Hilltop, and in American NCAA and professional basketball, in the second half of the 20th century after re...turning to WA and building the Academy athletic program into a prep school powerhouse. He later ushered in the modern era of basketball as head men's coach at the University of Connecticut and took a lead role in founding the NCAA’s Big East Conference, which earned him the John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017. Until recently, Dee had maintained a constant, reassuring presence at Worcester Academy, regularly attending the WA’s Rowe Family Scholarship Golf Tournament, Reunion Weekends, the Varsity Club dinner, athletic events of every kind, and other special events. As a special assistant to the head of school at WA, he was instrumental in generating essential support for the Academy, including fundraising for the Rowe Family Scholarship, which has benefitted many dozens of Academy students over the years. He was a member of the Worcester Academy Hall of Fame and was a recipient of its distinguished Varsity Club Award. We love you, Dee, rest in peace. And many thanks from the Worcester Academy community for your friendship and for your dedication to WA over these many years. We send our deepest condolences to the entire Rowe family and to your many friends and loved ones around the globe. The Rowe family has announced that funeral services will be private, but a celebration of his life is to be held at a future date when the COVID-19 pandemic has abated and conditions allow. (This post will be updated as additional information may become available)

This quote is critically important for WA and every school across the nation, as we grapple with inequities compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing fight for racial justice for all. Celebrating our differences empowers all of us and creates new and exciting pathways for connectivity. We're proud to use this quote to launch the #WeAreWA campaign. Check back every other week for a new #WeAreWA post from WA's Diversity Committee.

Our Head Admission Ambassadors put their creativity to work this summer and created this video for new students looking at WA. Filming and submitting their part of the video from both near and far, the ambassadors share what they love about WA!
It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sue Moynagh passed away earlier this month. For fifty-five years, Sue was a fixture at WAas a member of the Dining Services team where she cared for WA students as if they were her own family. She was invested in her work and entirely committed to our students. She often took them under her wings," as she would say, especially if they seemed homesick or worried. Most importantly, she was there for them and was a presenc...e they could count on. So many students formed a special bond with Sue over the yearsso much so that in 2015 students produced a video in her honor! Sue retired in 2017 and a year later was inducted into the Worcester Academy Hall of Fame. She was also an inaugural recipient of WA's Staff Appreciation Award in 2007. Sue's dedication to the WA community shone through in her Hall of Fame induction tributeEven when there was a blizzard I went to work...I lived right here in the neighborhood so I could walk up when nobody else could make it in. I’d say, ‘They’re my kids, and I have to take care of them.’" Sue will be missed by generations of WA students, faculty, and staff. Our thoughts and condolences are with Sue's family through this difficult time.

That letter was followed up this morning with a letter from WA's board president, Jim Pietro. Mr. Pietro announced a $100,000 donation to launch WA's Resilience, Equity, Affirmation and Leadership Initiative (R.E.A.L)! Thank you to Jim Pietro and Terrie Hanna for this generous and important donationand for helping to create something that will have R.E.A.L. impact at WA! On Wednesday, June 3, 2020, a response to the murder of George Floyd and the national climate went out from our Head of School, Ron Cino, to the WA community. Prior to Mr. Cino's letter, an internal campus response was sent and we focused our immediate attention to students, faculty and staff, and the Black Alumni Association, followed by broader internal listening circles and debrief sessions. We will continue our listening and debrief circles in the short-term, and in the l...ong-term, through training, learning and development for faculty, staff, and students. We will lean into building our equity and inclusion efficacy and structures, so that we can create the needed change in our own school community and in the greater society, which is foundational to our mission and core values. Naming the deep-seated roots of racism, prejudice, inequity and injustice in our society, is the base for plotting strategic action. Mr. Cino's letter is available at the link below.
