Good afternoon. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks released approximately 26 Bighorn Sheep into the Tendoy Mountains this morning as partners from the BDNF, BLM, th...e Wild Sheep Foundation and local landowners looked on, forming a wing alongside the trailers used to transport the sheep. BDNF Biologist Jaime Trivette was the first to swing the trailer gate open as the sheep leapt into their new habitat. In 2015, hunters and biologists removed the sheep population in this area due to disease amongst the herds. The disease, (a pneumonia epidemic), had caused massive mortality in both adult sheep and lambs and was determined to be impossible to eradicate. These ‘new’ sheep were captured from Wild Horse Island on Flathead Lake, collared and tested for any sings of infection prior to their release early this morning. Jesse Newby, FWP Research Wildlife Technician for this project, discussed the lengthy process it has been to release these sheep here today and explained that the release site is in the midst of prime sheep habitat according to a study conducted by Montana State University. We are especially proud of the work done by FWP to see this project through and equally happy that the B-D will provide some of the critical range needed to support the new herd. In a nod to the history of sheep in this area, pictured below are some of the pictographs located in this region. Mike Ryan, BDNF Archaeologist, provided these photos and explained to me that the pictographs in this area include sheep motifs and potentially date back hundreds of years. So, we would like to welcome the new herd back to an old home! #BDNF #BetterTogether

Last week, FWP and CSKT Wildlife Management Program staff, along with other partners, captured a group of 26 bighorn sheep on Wild Horse Island on Flathead Lake... State Park. These sheep were safely moved to prime sheep habitat in the Tendoy Mountains near Lima. In 2015, hunters and biologists removed the sheep population in the Tendoys due to disease among the herds. The disease, a pneumonia epidemic, had caused massive mortality in both adult sheep and lambs and was determined to be impossible to eradicate. The goal is for this new herd of sheep to re-establish in this area. Wild Horse Island is home to a world-class sheep herd, and over the years this amazing herd has helped support, or augment, other bighorn populations across the nation, including Montana. We were going through last years pics and we forgot to post this video. Flathead Lake is anything but calm. 15 minutes before I took this video the lake was dead flat.

During the fall and winter, conditions on Flathead Lake can change in an instant. We encourage everyone to check the NOAA Flathead Lake wave forecast before la...unching a boat, and when in doubt, don't go out. Because of the high waves forecasted for tonight and early on the morning of the 13th, we have unfortunately had to pull the dock at Yellow Bay. We hope to be able to put the dock back in the water by noon on the 13th, provided the forecast doesn't change. Thank you for your understanding as we protect these expensive docks and please be safe! UPDATE: Unfortunately, the wind forecast is not looking good for putting the dock back in the water today. We hope to put the dock back in the water tomorrow (11/14) if the forecast allows.
