Animal of the Month! . . A roving 70’s shag carpet? Check again! This quirky crustacean is a decorator crab. .... . The resident spider crab is the fashionable cousin to the sheep and Dungeness crab. Using what’s available in the surrounding environment, these decorator crabs attach organisms to their shells for camouflage and protection. Like all crabs, decorators molt their shells as they grow. Following a strict leave no frill policy, the crab will recycle the algae, anemone, bryozoan, etc. it has collected and fasten it to the larger shell. . See these decorator crabs for yourself on one of our guided night dives! . : @pdemman #sdexpeditions #animalofthemonth #scubadiving #crab #decoratorcrab #crustacean #nightdiving #lajollashores #scubadiving
