On December 22nd, 2019a year ago todayJennifer Jones took a bow following a beautiful performance as Arabian Coffee in ‘A Victorian Nutcracker’. Jen has been a part of Portland Ballet for over a decade now, and we are thrilled that she is continuing at PB in the roll of Ballet Maste...r. Join us in celebrating her career today! Congratulations to all of the amazing students who participated in the #PBSI2020! This year’s Intensive was definitely different and included staggered hours, increased cleaning, smaller groups, COVID-questions upon entering, and a lot of physical distancing and virus-spread protection. And that all after months of staying (and training) at home! Nonetheless, our young dancers showed up everyday with joy and passion, and worked incredibly hard. Thank you all for be...ing part of the program! Summer courses continue over the next couple of weeks, but stay tuned- Announcements and schedules for the 2020/2021 school year are coming August 1st! What an incredible Week 1 of the #PBSI2020! Though the groups are small and physically distant (and policies are plentiful), our students have been great with our new procedures and are working so hard! Some of the offerings this week included Jazz and Pantomime for our youngest students; Pointe, Character and Conditioning for the older levels; and Ballet, Modern, and Pilates for all! We are also working on a special video project, instead of an in-studio performance this year. We can’t wait for 2 more awesome weeks!
Reflecting on the first wonderful day of our Summer Intensive... With a whole bunch of new procedures and policies, but also joy and excitement, we kicked off the #PBSI2020 today! Thank you to our staff, faculty, parents, and students for working hard and being diligent, to make sure we all stay safe and healthy. Here’s to a great three weeks!
Today has been a learning experience for us, and we hope for you too. There are countless incredible BIPOC dancers, directors, and companies out there, making amazing art and using their platforms the listing in this image is not by any means complete! We encourage you to follow them, and keep checking the #JuneteenthDanceBreak hashtag, to read and see more of the many brilliant black dancers and their achievements, beauty, and talents. We know we will. Seeing both the b...allet community and our local #PortlandME community honor and celebrate Juneteenth today was inspirational, and as we move forward, we will keep working to make this art form we love more inclusive. Today is Juneteenth, and PB is joining the global dance community in celebrating Black creativity and power, and sharing dance legacies. #JuneteenthDanceBreak (Left) Mary Hinkson, born 1925 in Philadelphia, studied dance while attending the University of Wisconsin. She received both her B.S. and her M.S. in physical education. Following graduation, Hinkson moved to New York and was one of the first black dancers who joined the Martha Graham Dance Company. There, Graham ...created many parts for her. After performing many featured roles, Hinkson had a long career as a dance instructor at the Graham School, Julliard, and at the High School of Performing Arts. She also taught contemporary techniques to world renowned companies, such as the Joffrey Ballet, Royal Danish, Dance Theater of Harlem, and Stuttgart Ballet. (Right) Joe Nash (1919-2005) and Pearl Primus (1919-1994). Nash was a prominent historian of African American dance history A self-taught dancer, he grew up during the Harlem Renaissance and was in military service during World War 2. When he returned from the War, Nash began studying dance literature and performing on Broadway. He also taught and lectured in Philadelphia and New York, and was widely considered a top expert on the role that African-American dancers played in the development of modern dance. Primus was a dancer, choreographer, anthropologist, and a teacher. Born in Trinidad and raised in New York, she received her degree from Hunter College before making her dance debut in 1943. Primus founded her own company three years later, and was praised for her dramatic-yet-graceful movement. Her works were often inspired by black writers or racial issues. She received a grant to study dance in Africa, and continued her research in the Caribbean and southern US. In 1991, Primus was honored with the National Medal of Arts. These are just 3 of the COUNTLESS of black artists who made significant contributions to the dance scene in the past century, and whose legacies live on today. #Juneteenth #blackartists #balletrelevesforblacklives See more
Today is Juneteenth, and PB is joining the global dance community in celebrating Black creativity, power, and sharing dance legacies. (Left) Clarence ‘Buddy’ Bradley grew up in Harrisburg, PA in 1908 He was a primarily self-taught dancer who performed, coached, and created routines for Broadway actors and dancers in NYC in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Bradley then left New York for London, where he staged major musical productions and films. He choreographed with ballet... stars like George Balanchine and Frederick Ashton, and taught famous ballerinas, including Alicia Markova. Bradley became the first black dancer to run a British all-white company and was considered a best kept secret in dance choreography. (Top right) Sylvester Campbell was born in Oklahoma in 1938. He trained at the School of American Ballet, the schools of the Royal Ballet and Ballet Rambert in London. In 1960, Campbell started at the Netherlands Ballet (now Dutch National), where he became a soloist. He later danced as a guest artist with the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, with Maurice Béjart in Paris, and as a soloist with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. After his performing career, Campbell returned to the US and ran the dance department of the Baltimore School of Arts for 15 years. (Great interview with Campbell in an old ‘Ballet Review’ can be found on our website’s Resources-page). (Bottom right) Syvilla Fort (born in 1917) began her own training at a young age, and started giving lessons to neighborhood children at the age of nine. She studied at the Cornish School of Allied Arts, and was introduced to Katherine Dunham, who offered Fort a spot in her company. After Fort’s performing career ended in the mid-1940s following a bad knee injury, she was appointed as chief administrator and instructor at the Katherine Dunham School of Dance. When the school closed in 1954, Fort and her husband opened their own studio in New York and Fort developed the ‘Afro-Modern technique’. She become a prominent teacher, shaping dancers and actors such as James Earl Jones, James Dean, José Limon, and Jane Fonda. (These are just 3 of the COUNTLESS of black artists who made significant contributions to the dance scene in the past century, and whose legacies live on today.
