#LighthouseLore from the #SeaportAssociation... The first known lighthouse was the Pharos of Alexandria, Egypt. Ptolemy I and his son Ptolemy II constructed it between 300 and 280 B.C. It stood about 450 feet high. This lighthouse was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was destroyed in stages by invaders and earthquakes, being destroyed in the 1300s. Broad is ideal because it reflects our mission to preserve Long Island Sound, Sheffield Island, and the historic Sheffield Island Lighthouse. Thank you, Michael! Did you know that....The original 33-foot light tower on Sheffield Island was built by the U.S. Government and overseen by the Smith family that lived on Sheffield Island. The first lighthouse had an intricate lighting system consisting of parabolic reflectors that used a clockwork mechanism that produced red and white flashes to warn mariners that they were entering the ledges. In 1868, the first light tower was dismantled and replaced by the beautiful lighthouse we see today.
