The Victorian Government is undertaking consultations regarding strategies for the promotion, protection and realisation of human rights in Victoria.
A discussion paper about the consultation process and an invitation to make submissions is available at www.justice.vic.gov.au/humanrights.
Submissions are called for by 1 August 2024 and can be made in writing or online.
This is an important opportunity for Victorians to have a say about issues such as: the fundamental importance of all civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights; the need to constitutionally or legislatively entrench human rights in Victoria through a Charter of Human Rights; the responsibility of government to respect, protect and fulfil human rights; enforcement mechanisms and the availability of effective remedies where human rights are violated, breached or not fulfilled; and the utility of engaging issues such as poverty, homelessness, marginalisation and disadvantage in a human rights framework.
If you are interested in hearing more about human rights and how you can engage with and respond to the consultation process, you are invited to attend the forum (detailed below) which is presented by Council to Homeless Persons, Federation of Community Legal Centres, Financial and Consumer Rights Council, Public Interest Law Clearing House and Victorian Council of Social Service.
