As we all have had a lot of time at home to reflect, we would like to share some of our volunteer’s most memorable experiences with us in Kenya... Shelly: It is the day I met a boy who ran to the streets to look for a change in his environment. Brian Bravo. He replies, when I asked, jino lako nani?, which translates to what is your name in Swahili. I just smiled back at him knowing his life was about to change. We instantly connected. I saw a young boy in need of guida...nce and good role models to help him realize his potential. So together at @arriveinkenya we worked to rebuild his confidence. During his transition at Arrive, this once rebellious 11-year-old started to see what it is like to not get rewarded for bad behavior. While at Arrive, his acting out for attention came to a halt and each day he willingly worked hard to grow into a remarkable scholar in school. With time, he became a role model to other kids and a huge help around the Arrive household. After a year of living with Arrive, Brian approached me and said he was ready to go back to his home and reunite with the family he left behind. Together we went back to his home. It was amazing to see the reunion and to witness his family recognize his transformation. I could tell Brian was ready and willing to take all the lessons he had learned at Arrive comfortably back with him to his family. Now it’s up to him to create goals and strive to succeed. Through the tears, shock, and embrace I saw a reunited family. I can’t even describe how beautiful and special that experience was and is for me. @mhart625 See more
