Mike Sorge, DNR stream biologist, didn't know that when he dipped his net into Black Earth Creek he'd find the first documented population of New Zealand mudsna...ils (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) in Wisconsin. These rice-sized snails are difficult to detect and are born pregnant, reproducing quickly. These snails outcompete native species for food and provide little if any nutritional value to fish. And once they're in an area, they're tough to manage. The most practical and cost-effective way to stop these snails from spreading is early detection and prevention, like cleaning your gear. Since their discovery, the DNR, along with many partners and volunteers, have worked to find an efficient way to watch for new populations of these snails, including the use of conservation canines. Midwest Conservation Dogs, Inc. (MCDI) has been training dogs to detect various species since 2016. To prevent the risk that the dogs themselves might unintentionally spread the species, the dogs are being trained to detect the New Zealand mudnsails just from collected sediment samples. After almost 2 months of training, MCDI K9s Betty White and Ernie can detect when as few as one New Zealand mudsnail is in a half cup of sediment. Sniffing 35 samples during the first round of official surveys, Betty White has indicated 70% positive detections, and Ernie is at 80% positive detections. Remember to do your part to stop the spread of New Zealand mudsnails and other invasive species: - INSPECT waders, boats, trailers, motors, and hunting equipment including boots, push poles, blinds, and dogs - REMOVE all plants, animals, and mud - DRAIN all water from boats, motors, decoys, live wells, and other equipment - NEVER MOVE plants, animals, or live fish away from a water body
